The Gospel That Saves: How to Receive Eternal Life

Sometimes we feel a space inside us that nothing seems to fill. Even when things seem fine, life can feel incomplete, as if something essential is missing. We can do everything right.

We can seemingly have it all—job, house, spouse, children—and still feel that emptiness. For some, it makes life feel meaningless, even when everything seems in order.

From the beginning, God created a perfect world. Humanity was made to live in harmony with Him, to glorify Him, and to enjoy life as He designed it. But Adam and Eve’s choice in the garden changed everything, bringing brokenness that affects us all.

That quiet longing points to something real. Scripture shows why this longing exists and how Jesus Christ fills it, bringing hope, forgiveness, and life that truly satisfies.

From here, we can look at the reality of sin, God’s desire to save, and the gospel of Jesus Christ—the one who restores what feels broken and makes life whole.

The Reality of Sin and Judgment

From the moment Adam and Eve brought sin into the world, all humanity has been under sin. Because of this, death, which is spiritual death, has passed upon all men, for all have sinned.

Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned — Romans 5:12 KJV

No matter how we present ourselves, it is absolutely impossible for anyone to be good enough to enter heaven by their own merit. Even the best among us falls short of God’s perfect standard.

As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one — Romans 3:10 KJV

For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; to declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus — Romans 3:23-26 KJV

The Consequence of Sin

God is a righteous God and cannot allow sin to go unpunished. The just payment for sin is death.

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. — Romans 6:23 KJV

God’s Desire to Save

Despite man’s sin, God is not only just, but also merciful. He desires all men to be saved and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

Paul writes to Timothy:

Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time. — 1 Timothy 2:4-6 KJV

Salvation is offered to all. The question then is, how has God made this possible?

The Gospel: What Jesus Christ Has Done

Paul, writing to the church at Corinth, clearly declares the gospel by which we are saved:

Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; by which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures — 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 KJV

Jesus Christ, the sinless Lamb of God, did what we could never do. He took our place.

For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. — 2 Corinthians 5:21 KJV

He died for our sins, was buried, and rose again the third day. This finished work is the gospel that saves. There is nothing we can add to it.

Salvation by Grace Through Faith

Justification comes by faith in the blood of Christ and His finished work on the cross, and not by anything we do. Any message that adds works to this is a false gospel.

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast. — Ephesians 2:8-9 KJV

There are denominational traditions that try and drag us back to a works-based gospel, which completely contradicts the teaching of scripture.

And again:

Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. — Galatians 2:16 KJV

If this isn’t enough, then I will give one more example from Paul’s letter to Titus:

Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; that being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.— Titus 3:5-7 KJV

The Only Way of Salvation

Salvation is found only in the blood of Christ.

In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins — Colossians 1:14 KJV

A Personal Response

You must make a decision. Will you trust in what Christ has already done?

Believe the gospel. Trust that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose again. Rely on His finished work alone.O

Once saved, you are sealed with the Holy Spirit and given new life in Christ. This does not mean life becomes easy, but you are given a new hope and a new purpose.

In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory — Ephesians 1:13-14 KJV
